Imperialism is the policy of a country to extend that country's influence and power through diplomacy or military force.
In the Heart of Darkness, "diplomacy" has only face-value in England; it is merely a front for the harvesting of resources in the Congo.
The "Age of Imperialism" is a period of time that starts around early 1900s where all over the world, but especially from Europe, countries began to expand their influence and project their might over lesser developed countries. A huge victim of European imperialism is Africa. With the discovery of raw materials and precious items like ivory in Africa, European countries fought over staking a claim in the African Continent. The scars of this scrabble are visible today --many African countries are shaped due to the old European imperialism boundaries.
What is a novella?
A novella is short novel or a rather long short story. Pretty much its too short to be considered a novel but too long to be called a short story.
Novella are fictional works, prose narratives of a length between a short story and a novel. Its name actually derives from the Italian word "novella" which means new. Why new? Because it was a new way to write a medium length story!
Novella is a common literary form in Europe where it originated during the early Renaissance era of Italian and French literature.
Not only are novella in-between in length between a short story and a novel, but novella are just inbetweeners of the two genres itself (its the perfect mix-mash, middle-ground, of the two). The structure of the novella is more complex than a short story (and yes you guessed it!) simpler than a novel. Because of this novella are generally not written in chapters (although they may be sectionalized) but are supposed to be read in one awesome sitting.
